Offset Your Carbon

How can investing in rainforest protection offset my carbon emissions?
According to the UN Panel on Climate Change, deforestation in tropical regions accounts for 20% of man-made emissions of carbon dioxide. By preventing deforestation in highly threatened tropical rainforests, you are stopping the release of this harmful CO2 into the atmosphere. Each acre of rainforest that is protected can offset up to 200 tons of CO2 emissions.

What are the offset projects like?
ACA invests in protecting the richest rainforests of the southwestern Amazon. These areas are under increasing threat by agricultural expansion, gold mining, timber harvest, and road construction. ACA and its local partners create conservation concessions through long-term agreements with the Peruvian government, develop management plans for these reserves using the best science available, and train local people to serve as guardians of the forest.

How do rainforest offsets compare with other offset options?
Rainforest protection is one of the most cost-effective ways to offset your carbon. Carbon offsets through rainforest preservation provide numerous additional social and environmental benefits. Offsetting your carbon with ACA means you are preserving biodiversity in some of the richest rainforests on Earth—areas with world-record counts of mammals and butterflies. ACA carbon offset projects also create benefits for people living in the forest through the creation of community sustainability funds for the development of forest-friendly micro-enterprise projects and training for managing natural resources.

How are the projects certified?
ACA’s carbon credit projects follow the rigorous Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance (CCBA) standards for land management projects that simultaneously minimize climate change, support sustainable development and conserve biodiversity. The projects are also being reviewed for certification using the Voluntary Carbon Standard, which is backed by a leading team of carbon market banks and brokers.
