20 Years in the Making: Honoring the Tacana II Victory in Bolivia

Some victories take decades to arrive. This is one of them, and it’s a reminder of what patience, planning, and unwavering commitment can build over time.

For more than twenty years, the Indigenous communities of Puerto Pérez, Las Mercedes, Toromonas, and El Tigre in Bolivia fought tirelessly to receive legal recognition of their ancestral forest home. Just over a year ago in July 2025, that battle was won: the Tacana II Indigenous Territory received a formal legal title, permanently protecting over 670,000 acres of primary forest. This area serves as a vital biological corridor linking protected habitats across Bolivia and Peru and is a major victory for both Indigenous rights and conservation efforts.

Alongside our sister organization, Conservación Amazónica-ACEAA, Amazon Conservation worked alongside the communities of Tacana II for 15 years, providing the technical mapping, funding, and legal support needed to navigate this complex journey.
